About the workshop

Welcome to 35mm Photography

In this 6hr workshop you will learn the fundamentals of analog photography as well as how to develop traditional black and white films by hand. We will cover topics like different types of film cameras and how to use them, exposure and how it works right through to how photo chemicals work and developing your films at home. You will leave with a sound knowledge on how cameras, film and developing works, your own roll of hand developed negatives and a digital copy of your photographs made on the day.

Course outline:

We’ll start with a brief history on how photography advanced to the roll film era then jump straight into how a camera works and what is needed to make well exposed photograph. Once you have an understanding of camera basics we’ll go for a photo walk with your new found knowledge. We'll have a stop for coffee and light lunch before heading back to Work In Process to hand develop your shot film, scan and analyse your negatives.

What’s Included:

Everything you will need is provided in the course;

  • A manual 35mm film camera
  • A roll of 35mm black and white film
  • Coffee and a light lunch
  • Photographic chemicals
  • Developing equipment

What to bring:

  • Comfortable clothes and walking shoes
  • A clean keep cup
  • A rain jacket and/or umbrella (If the weather is looking dreary)
  • If you own a working 35mm camera and want to learn how it works please bring it along!

Running times:

Classes will start at 9am and finish near 3pm, with a break around mid-day.
